Tension is mounting in Sokoto State following the tragic killing of 16 Hausa hunters in Uromi, Edo State, allegedly by local vigilantes and some youths.
The incident, which took place last Thursday, has sparked widespread fear of retaliatory attacks, leading to heightened anxiety and the closure of businesses in certain parts of the North.
On Friday, reports from Gists9ja indicated a palpable sense of unease in Sokoto metropolis, particularly in business districts. Areas such as Bello Way, Emir Yahya Road, Sahara, and Aliyu Jodi were noticeably deserted, with most shops closed. Although initial reports suggested that only Igbo-owned shops were targeted, local businessman Buhari Haruna Illelah, who runs a POS service and sells motorcycle spare parts, told DAILY POST that the closures were enforced across the board.
“The police came to us and asked us to close our shops and leave. I didn’t see any youths or armed persons, but as I speak with you, I am at home,” Illelah said. He added that the closure of businesses was based on information suggesting the possibility of attacks by unknown youths, prompting authorities to advise everyone to stay indoors.
The widespread shop closures appear to be a precautionary measure to prevent any outbreak of violence, as local authorities step up efforts to restore calm and maintain order in the wake of the killings. Since the news of the deaths in Edo State broke, many have expressed concerns that the incident could provoke retaliatory attacks in Northern states.
In response to the growing tension, security agencies are reportedly making “frantic efforts” to prevent any form of reprisal. Civil society organizations and community leaders have also joined in calling for restraint, urging citizens to seek justice through lawful means rather than resorting to violence.
As of the latest updates, there have been no confirmed protests or violent clashes in Sokoto, but the atmosphere remains charged as residents closely monitor developments. To maintain order, security operatives have reportedly increased their presence in key areas of the city.
