Prince Adewale Adebayo, former presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has revealed that discussions are underway between the SDP and several prominent political figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, regarding potential defections to the party.
Adebayo made the disclosure during an appearance on Channels TV’s Sunday Politics, where he spoke on the ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He noted that representatives of both Atiku and Obi, alongside other key political players such as former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, have initiated conversations with the SDP regarding a possible alliance or outright defection.
Waves of Defections Incoming?
“People are joining our party, and we are welcoming them with open arms,” Adebayo said. “You can see how actively I’m involved in receiving them. The only challenge we’re navigating is helping some of them adjust to our internal culture—especially those unfamiliar with transparent, rule-based politics.”
He hinted at concerns about political habits some defectors might bring along, describing some of their tactics as resembling “Boy Scout activities” or “black market operations.” Nevertheless, he maintained that the SDP is prepared to integrate these individuals while preserving its core values.
“All the names you’ve mentioned—El-Rufai, Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi—yes, there are conversations happening. Many prominent politicians are talking to us, and while nothing is final until they formally join, we are ready to receive them,” he added.
Adebayo also confirmed that the party’s financial secretary and other insiders have been approached by intermediaries acting on behalf of these politicians, signaling the seriousness of the negotiations.
A United Front Against APC
He emphasized that if these figures commit to SDP principles and help present a united and credible alternative to the electorate, the party could defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next election.
“If they can align with our ethos and respect the way we operate, we have a real opportunity to defeat the APC and retire President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from active politics—whether to Lagos or any place of his choice,” Adebayo declared confidently.
The Bigger Picture
The growing momentum around the SDP could signify a major political shift ahead of 2027, especially as opposition parties seek to unify their efforts in response to the current administration’s policies.
If the speculated alliances materialize, the 2027 election could witness a formidable third-force coalition challenging both the APC and the PDP establishment.
