Renowned Nigerian business icon, Pascal Gabriel Dozie, has passed away at the age of 85.
His family confirmed the news in an official statement released on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, noting that he died peacefully on Monday, just a day before his 86th birthday.
Born on April 9, 1939, in a devout Catholic family, Pascal Dozie was the son of Charles Dozie, a respected catechist. He began his early education at Our Lady’s School in Emekuku, later attending the Holy Ghost Juniorate Seminary and Holy Ghost College in Owerri, where he earned his West African Senior School Certificate.
Driven by an unwavering commitment to academic and professional excellence, Dozie later traveled to the United Kingdom. There, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the prestigious London School of Economics. He went on to obtain a Master’s degree in Administrative Science from City University, London, where he specialized in Operational Research and Industrial Engineering.
Pascal Dozie’s contributions to Nigeria’s financial and telecommunications sectors were groundbreaking. In 1990, he established Diamond Bank, a commercial bank that grew to become one of Nigeria’s most respected financial institutions before its eventual merger with Access Bank in a landmark deal that reshaped the banking landscape.
Beyond banking, Dozie played a key role in the telecom industry as the Chairman of MTN Nigeria during its crucial formative years. His leadership and strategic vision helped the company expand across Nigeria and solidify its place as a leading telecom provider.
Widely admired for his integrity, business acumen, and pioneering spirit, Dozie was often described as a statesman in the corporate world. His career was marked by a deep commitment to national development, mentorship, and ethical leadership.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Chinyere, and five children.
