Activities at the 28,000-barrels-per-day oil refinery located in Ogidigben, Warri, Delta State, have come to an abrupt halt following a protest by members of the Itsekiri community.
According to a video report aired by TVC, a large crowd comprising men, women, and youths from the Ogidigben area gathered at the main entrance of the oil facility on Wednesday, voicing their displeasure over recent political developments.
The facility, which was previously operated by Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) and has since come under the management of Renaissance Africa Energy Holdings, became the focal point of the protest that has heightened tensions in the region.
The demonstrators expressed strong opposition to recommendations made by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) concerning the redrawing of ward boundaries and polling units within the Warri Federal Constituency. This proposed delineation follows a recent judgment delivered by the Supreme Court.
Chanting solidarity songs and carrying placards, the protesters demanded urgent government intervention, warning that their agitation would extend to other key national installations and assets situated within Itsekiri territories if their grievances are ignored.
Local sources confirmed that operations at the facility were completely grounded as the protesters blocked access routes and shut down entry points, disrupting daily activities.
The unfolding situation underscores growing discontent within the Itsekiri ethnic group, who allege marginalization in recent administrative and electoral decisions affecting their communities.
