The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reiterated its commitment to impartiality and transparency as it navigates the ongoing leadership dispute within the Labour Party (LP).
This assurance was given by INEC’s Acting Chairman, Sam Olumekun, during a visit to the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday by a high-profile delegation of Labour Party leaders. The delegation, which included the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, appealed to the Commission to officially acknowledge Senator Esther Nenadi Usman as the rightful national chairperson of the Labour Party.
According to INEC, the delegation presented a Certified True Copy of a recent Supreme Court ruling that has implications for the party’s leadership structure. Governor Otti emphasized that the meeting was held to promote clarity, foster mutual understanding, and ensure institutional harmony regarding the party’s current hierarchy.
A statement released by INEC after the meeting confirmed that the discussions between both parties were constructive and focused on upholding democratic principles.
“The Independent National Electoral Commission today received a delegation from the Labour Party led by Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, at its Abuja headquarters,” the statement read. “During the meeting, Governor Otti submitted a Certified True Copy of the Supreme Court judgment concerning the LP leadership issue. The engagement was aimed at fostering greater understanding and institutional cooperation.”
INEC Acting Chairman, Sam Olumekun, assured the delegation that the Commission remains fully committed to its constitutional responsibilities and will continue to operate with neutrality and strict adherence to the rule of law.
This development comes at a critical time for the Labour Party as it seeks to resolve internal leadership conflicts and present a united front ahead of future elections. The party has maintained that Senator Usman’s leadership is legitimate, citing the recent apex court decision as validation.
