Gabon’s transitional leader, General Brice Oligui Nguema, has officially secured a sweeping victory in the country’s presidential election, according to provisional results released by the Interior Ministry.
Nguema, who came to power following a military coup in 2023 that ended the Bongo family’s 55-year grip on the country, reportedly won about 90 percent of the votes cast in Saturday’s pivotal election. The outcome solidifies his hold on power and signals broad popular support following a year marked by political transition.
His closest contender, Alain Claude Bilie-By-Nze, received roughly 3 percent of the vote, making it a one-sided contest among the eight candidates who participated. The election saw a voter turnout of 70.40 percent, reflecting a significant level of civic engagement during a period of national restructuring.
Nguema, a former head of the Republican Guard and a key figure in the 2023 coup, had long been viewed as the frontrunner in the race. His rise to the presidency through democratic validation marks a turning point in Gabonese politics, transitioning the country from military rule to civilian governance under his leadership.
While the results indicate a decisive win, Bilie-By-Nze voiced concerns about the integrity of the vote-counting process. On election day, he hinted at possible irregularities but stopped short of providing detailed allegations. In response, Nguema reassured citizens, insisting that the election had been conducted fairly and transparently.
“This was a transparent process. The will of the people has been respected,” Nguema stated during a post-election address, urging unity and reaffirming his commitment to national development.
The election is seen as a crucial step in Gabon’s return to constitutional order after the dramatic ousting of former President Ali Bongo Ondimba, whose family had ruled the oil-rich Central African nation since 1967. Nguema’s ascent through both military and electoral means underscores a significant realignment in the country’s political landscape.
