The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State is facing growing internal challenges as several of its members, including prominent grassroots figures, have decamped to the Labour Party (LP), weakening its opposition stance in the state.
Leading the defection was Hon. Sunday Anya Ojo, a notable political figure from Isiama Ward in Elu Ohafia and a former House of Assembly candidate. Ojo previously served as the Senior Special Assistant on Youth Mobilization during the administration of the former governor of Abia State.
The high-profile defection took place in Amaekpu Ohafia, within the Ohafia Local Government Area, at the residence of the state’s Deputy Governor, Ikechukwu Emetu. The event drew a large crowd of enthusiastic supporters and political stakeholders, underscoring the growing appeal of the Labour Party in the region.
While addressing the gathering, Ojo cited the declining relevance and internal disarray within the PDP as a major reason for his departure. He declared that the party no longer resonates with the people of Abia and described it as politically obsolete.
“I chose to leave the PDP and officially align with the Labour Party because the PDP in Abia State has lost its footing. It is no longer a viable political force—it’s effectively defunct. I’m bringing my full political structure into the LP to contribute to the new wave of transformation sweeping through the state,” Ojo said.
Deputy Governor Emetu warmly welcomed the new entrants, hailing their move as a bold and strategic decision that would further strengthen the Labour Party’s base in Ohafia and across Abia State. He commended Ojo’s leadership and assured him and his followers of full integration and active roles within the party structure.
Political observers see the mass defection as a significant gain for the Labour Party, particularly in Ohafia, a region known for its political vibrancy. With the 2027 general elections on the horizon, the move signals a shifting political tide that could reshape the power dynamics in Abia State.
As more influential figures continue to reassess their affiliations, the Labour Party appears to be consolidating its position as a dominant political force, posing a serious challenge to the PDP and other parties in the state.
