The Kaduna State Government has rescued a seven-year-old boy, Abubakar Sani, who was subjected to severe abuse by his father.
The child’s father allegedly tied his legs and poured hot water on them as punishment for stealing biscuits.
According to a statement from the Commissioner for Human Services and Social Development, Rabi Salisu, the disturbing incident occurred in the Lere Local Government Area of the state.
Salisu revealed that the ministry received the distress report about nine days ago. Unfortunately, by the time officials intervened, the injuries on Abubakar’s legs had become severely infected. “His legs had decayed to the point where maggots were emerging from the wounds,” she said. “Medical professionals advised immediate amputation to save his life.”
The Commissioner also disclosed that the child had been confined in a room for over 20 days by his father, Sani Tanimi Maishago, and stepmother. During that time, he was allegedly denied proper food and medical care. Both the father and stepmother have since been arrested by the police and are in custody. Legal proceedings are expected to begin once the investigation concludes.
“We are determined to ensure justice is served. This case will be pursued to the full extent of the law as a warning to others who may consider such inhumane treatment of children,” Salisu affirmed.
She urged parents and guardians to practice patience and apply moderation when disciplining children, stressing that extreme punishment can lead to irreversible harm or even death.
The Kaduna State Government also restated its commitment to protecting children’s rights. Commissioner Salisu emphasized that the welfare of every child remains a top priority for the government. “We are steadfast in our duty to ensure that children in Kaduna State are shielded from all forms of abuse, neglect, and exploitation,” she added.
