Popular Nigerian comedian, Oluwaseyitan Aletile, widely recognized by his stage name Seyi Law, has spoken out about the personal and professional backlash he has faced due to his open support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Despite losing a portion of his fan base and experiencing a decline in show patronage, the comedian says he stands firmly by his political choice and has no regrets.
In a recent appearance on the Teju Babyface Podcast, Seyi Law—who was among the public figures that actively campaigned for President Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election—reaffirmed his belief in Tinubu’s leadership potential. He argued that despite the ongoing economic difficulties and growing insecurity, Tinubu remains the most qualified leader to steer Nigeria towards progress.
“Tinubu Is Still Nigeria’s Best Option”
Reflecting on the widespread dissatisfaction with the state of the nation, Seyi Law declared that if President Tinubu fails to fix Nigeria, then no current politician can. He directly dismissed the chances of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party’s Peter Obi making any significant difference, citing his personal insights into their political histories.
“I say this sincerely and without sentiment—if Bola Ahmed Tinubu cannot turn Nigeria around, then I don’t believe any other politician can. Not Atiku, not Peter Obi. I know enough about all of them to say this confidently,” he said.
Sacrifice for the Future
Despite being the target of online vitriol and seeing his audience shrink because of his political stance, Seyi Law remains optimistic about the future. He expressed hope that the policy reforms introduced under President Tinubu’s administration will ultimately benefit future generations, including his own children.
“Some Nigerians hate me just because I supported Tinubu. Many have stopped attending my shows, and I’ve lost some support. But I believe in the sacrifices I’m making today,” he said. “Even if people don’t understand now, I hope that one day—when I’m old and my children are reaping the rewards—I’ll be glad I stood by what I believed in.”
A Divisive Political Stand
Seyi Law’s public endorsement of President Tinubu has sparked controversy in a deeply polarized political landscape. While some commend his courage to speak openly, others criticize what they see as an alignment with a government struggling to meet expectations amid economic hardship, fuel price hikes, and insecurity.
Still, the comedian remains unfazed by the backlash. For him, his advocacy stems not from blind loyalty but from a considered judgment about Nigeria’s complex challenges and the leadership required to confront them.
“I may not be popular for it, but my convictions are mine. I want a better Nigeria, and I believe President Tinubu can lay that foundation,” he concluded.
