Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has opened up on his decision not to back Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential flagbearer, in the 2023 general elections. Speaking during a media briefing in Abuja on Friday, Wike said his choice was based on strategic political calculations, not sentiment or online trends.
Wike dismissed Obi’s campaign as lacking genuine electoral strength, labeling him a “social media candidate” who, in his view, stood no realistic chance of winning the presidency.
“No, he didn’t stand a chance of winning,” Wike said bluntly. “I don’t associate myself with social media candidates. I deal with realities, not internet hype.”
The former Rivers State governor, who served in office until 2023, emphasized that his political decisions are rooted in deep analysis of electoral viability rather than popularity on digital platforms.
“As a politician, I assess candidates based on their likelihood of winning. It’s not about who trends online; it’s about who has the political structure and influence to succeed at the polls,” he stated.
Wike further noted that electoral victories in Nigeria are determined by a complex mix of factors, and not solely based on merit or public perception.
“In Nigerian politics, the best candidate doesn’t always win. Many dynamics influence outcomes ethnicity, alliances, logistics, funding, and even internal party politics all play significant roles,” he explained.
He also touched on the challenging environment in which the 2023 election was conducted, particularly the controversial currency redesign by the Central Bank of Nigeria and widespread fuel shortages.
“Tinubu’s path to victory was anything but smooth,” Wike remarked. “It was a chaotic time. There were deliberate policies like the naira redesign that made things very difficult. Yet, despite being from the ruling party, he faced stiff resistance from within.”
The FCT Minister commended President Bola Tinubu for navigating those difficulties and emerging victorious despite internal sabotage.
“No ruling party typically introduces disruptive policies during an election year. It was clear that some elements within the government were not on the same page. But Tinubu weathered the storm,” he said.
Concluding his remarks, Wike lauded Tinubu’s strategic thinking and political resilience.
“It takes more than luck it takes skill, experience, and divine favor. Tinubu has shown he understands the political game deeply. You must give credit where it’s due,” Wike added.
