The Labour Party (LP) in Delta State has strongly criticised Governor Sheriff Oborevwori over what it described as a wasteful and self-serving defection ceremony following his move from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking on Tuesday, Tony Ezeagwu, LP’s National Vice Chairman (South-South), described the event as a “waste of Delta resources” and a betrayal of public trust.
“It is a complete waste of resources for Oborevwori to spend such a huge amount of money to officially defect to APC,” Ezeagwu stated.
‘PDP Has Collapsed into APC, LP Is the Only Real Opposition’
Ezeagwu declared that with the PDP now collapsed into the APC in Delta, the Labour Party has emerged as the sole credible opposition in the state.
“We are the only opposition in Delta State now, and we just thank God that the governor and his PDP members made the blunder by defecting to APC,” he said.
Prediction of Chaos in APC Ranks
According to the LP chieftain, the defection will destabilise the APC, as it brings together political rivals and disgruntled elements under one roof.
“Trust Nigerian politicians — no one has the interest of the people at heart. This defection is driven by personal gain, and internal conflict is inevitable,” he noted.
He predicted that up to 80% of the defectors would eventually leave the APC, and hinted that some might even find their way to the Labour Party.
PDP’s Future in Delta ‘Irreparably Damaged’
Ezeagwu maintained that the PDP has irreversibly weakened itself by merging with the ruling party.
“The PDP has damaged itself beyond repair. It will be difficult for them to rise again in Delta State,” he asserted.
‘APC Is a Shelter for the Politically Damned’
Ezeagwu also referenced former APC chairman Adams Oshiomhole’s infamous statement: “As soon as you join APC, your sins are forgiven.”
“This defection is not about ideology or governance. It’s about seeking refuge from accountability. The APC has become a shelter for the politically damned,” he said.
With growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, the Labour Party says it remains focused on rebuilding public trust and positioning itself as a true alternative to the ruling class.
