Sowunmi made the bold declaration during a public discourse held in Abuja on Friday, as part of a May Day celebration organized by members of the Obidient Movement. The event was powered by the Cyrus Group in collaboration with the Free Nigeria Foundation.
Peter Obi: A Candidate with Genuine Intentions for Nigeria’s Progress
Despite being a staunch PDP member, Sowunmi admitted that Nigeria’s path to true development and sustainable governance lies in the leadership of Peter Obi. He praised Obi’s proactive approach to problem-solving, noting that unlike other political figures who simply wait for power, Obi is actively engaged in seeking solutions to Nigeria’s multifaceted challenges.
In his words:
“Yes, I am in the PDP, but I believe the future of this nation is with Peter Obi. He is the only sincere candidate in the political space right now—others are pretenders.”
Sowunmi also criticized Nigeria’s political structure, which he described as a “rotating baton of leadership between the North and the Southwest,” deliberately sidelining the Southeast, particularly the Igbo people. He argued that marginalizing the region, even with a capable leader like Obi available, is a disservice to national unity and progress.
Labour Party Reaffirms Commitment to Workers’ Welfare
Also addressing the gathering, the Acting National Chairman of the Labour Party, Senator Nenadi Usman, emphasized that the Labour Party was established to represent the interests of Nigerian workers across all sectors—construction, healthcare, education, security, and more.
She outlined five key focus areas for the party:
- Fair and equitable wages
- Protection of workers’ rights
- Access to quality healthcare
- Affordable housing
- Strict enforcement of labor laws
Senator Usman warned against celebrating hollow government achievements that fail to translate into improved quality of life for ordinary citizens.
“Any government that claims progress without improving the lives of its people is failing. We must stay focused and not trade our future or our children’s future for momentary gains,” she said.
Nigerian Youths Urged to Take Charge
Senator Ireti Kingibe, who represents the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in the Senate, expressed concern over the apparent apathy among Nigerian youths and supporters of the Obidient Movement. She criticized their silence and inaction in the face of the country’s mounting challenges.
“Young Nigerians are too quiet,” she said. “This silence is dangerous. If you don’t rise up and take ownership of this country, we are all heading toward a breakdown.”
