The media community in Ogun State has been plunged into mourning following the sudden death of seasoned broadcaster, Mrs. Bukola Agbakaizu, a respected journalist with Ogun State Television (OGTV), Abeokuta. The tragic incident occurred on Monday, May 12, 2025.
According to reports, Mrs. Agbakaizu collapsed while preparing for her scheduled afternoon shift at the state-owned broadcasting station. Despite efforts to revive her, she was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta.
Her passing was formally confirmed in a statement issued by the Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Council, Mr. Bunmi Adigun.
The statement described the late journalist as “a vibrant and multi-talented media professional” who contributed immensely to the growth of journalism in the state. At the time of her death, she was an ex officio member of the NUJ Ogun Council and had previously served as Vice Chairman of the OGTV Chapel.
“Bukola Agbakaizu was more than a colleague she was a sister, a mentor, and an unwavering pillar of support to many. Her sudden demise has left a vacuum that will be hard to fill,” the statement read.
Tributes have continued to pour in from colleagues, friends, and media stakeholders, all of whom described her as a compassionate, dedicated, and energetic media professional.
In a separate condolence message, the Ogun State chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) expressed its deep sorrow over the loss. Chairperson Sekinat Salam, in a statement, called Agbakaizu’s death “a shocking and painful loss that words cannot adequately describe.”
“She was a highly committed professional whose passion for journalism and humanity stood out,” Salam said. “Her departure is not only a loss to OGTV but to the entire media landscape in Ogun State. Her warmth, mentorship, and exemplary leadership qualities will remain evergreen in our hearts.”
Agbakaizu, who was 52 years old at the time of her death, is survived by her two children, an elderly mother, and numerous friends and colleagues. She was widely regarded as a trailblazer and a beacon of inspiration in her profession.
The media fraternity has pledged to honour her legacy by continuing the work she was so passionate about promoting truth, integrity, and public service through journalism.
As colleagues continue to share memories and tributes, the loss of Bukola Agbakaizu serves as a stark reminder of the dedication and sacrifices of journalists who work tirelessly behind the scenes.
“We entrust her soul to God’s eternal peace and pray for strength and comfort for her family and loved ones during this difficult time. Rest in power, Bukola an icon, a sister, a journalist to the core,” the NUJ statement concluded.
