The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has urged officers in the state to exercise utmost caution in the handling and use of firearms.
Orutugu gave the advice during his visit to the Police Mobile Force 29 Squadron in Amansea, Awka, where the late Inspector Amaechi Okolie, who was accidentally shot by his 10-year-old son, had served.
The commissioner also paid a condolence visit to the bereaved family and offered them a financial contribution in support.
Inspector Amaechi Okolie was tragically killed two days ago when his son accidentally discharged his loaded service rifle. The incident also left his second son, a six-year-old boy, injured.
In a statement issued by the state command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, it was confirmed that the Commissioner of Police visited Amansea to commiserate with the bereaved family as well as officers and personnel of the Squadron affected by the loss.
SP Tochukwu Ikenga stated:
“During the visit, the Commissioner of Police referred to the Police Mobile Force as his alma mater and emphasized the critical importance of adhering strictly to Police Operational Protocols, particularly while on duty.”
He stressed the importance of teamwork and urged the officers to stay committed and focused on their responsibilities, even in the face of tragedy.
“CP Orutugu’s visit to the Police Mobile Squadron in Amansea underscores his dedication to the welfare and morale of the Command’s personnel.
“He also extended a welfare package to the bereaved family and offered prayers for the swift recovery of the injured son, who is currently undergoing treatment in the hospital.”
Ikenga stated that the commissioner was received by the Commander of the Squadron, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Nasiru Adamu Kaila, who expressed appreciation to CP Orutugu for his visit and for demonstrating empathy towards the officers during their time of mourning.
