The Jigawa State Justice Sector Reform Committee has emphasized the need for improved coordination between the police, prosecutors, and magistrates as a key step toward enhancing justice delivery in the state.
In response to concerns over prolonged legal processes, the Jigawa State Government has inaugurated a special committee tasked with reviewing the over 300 pending cases across the state’s courts.
Speaking on the development, State Commissioner of Justice and Attorney General, Bello Fanini, said the committee reflects the current administration’s commitment to addressing delays in judicial proceedings.
At the committee’s inaugural meeting, Wangara noted that deliberations focused on critical issues such as remand and bail procedures, inconsistencies in legal provisions, and the welfare of lower court judges.
The gathering brought together key stakeholders in the justice system, including High Court Judges, Kadis, Magistrates, and Sharia Court Judges, who engaged in extensive discussions aimed at finding sustainable solutions to the state’s legal challenges.
Concerns were raised over the unnecessary and prolonged detention of suspects resulting from delays in legal proceedings.
According to the committee, inconsistencies were identified between the Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL), the Sharia Penal Codes, and other state laws—particularly in areas of jurisdiction and sentencing.
As a result, the committee called for clear definitions and harmonization of overlapping mandates in criminal cases to ensure more efficient and fair justice delivery.
Judges recommended the harmonization of conflicting legal provisions to ensure smoother judicial operations. They also appealed for improved working conditions to uphold and strengthen judicial integrity.
