The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has apprehended 312 suspects and confiscated 803.672 kilograms of hard drugs in Akwa Ibom between June 2024 and May 2025.
The Akwa Ibom State Commander of the NDLEA, Mrs. Obot Bassey, made the disclosure during a press conference in Uyo to commemorate the 2025 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, themed “The Evidence Is Clear: Invest In Prevention, #BreakTheCircle.
”Bassey revealed that of the 312 suspects arrested, 261 were male and 51 female, and added that 38 drug offenders were prosecuted and convicted during the reporting period.
The commander noted that the agency had treated and rehabilitated 43 male drug-dependent individuals and conducted drug abuse prevention education in 91 locations across Akwa Ibom State.
“Between June 2024 and May 2025, we arrested 312 suspects 261 males and 51 females and seized a total of 803.672 kilograms of illicit drugs,” Bassey stated.
“During this period, we prosecuted and secured convictions for 38 drug offenders, implemented drug addiction prevention programs in 91 different locations within the state, rehabilitated 43 male individuals, and provided counseling to 179 people,” she added.
Bassey emphasized that drug abuse should not be viewed solely as a criminal matter but as a significant public health concern, highlighting that prevention requires collective effort.
She urged parents, teachers, religious leaders, and community members to work together in building a supportive environment that promotes healthy living and discourages drug use.
The Akwa Ibom NDLEA commander further noted that beyond enforcing drug laws, the agency is also committed to safeguarding the future of Nigerian children.
Bassey cautioned young people about the harmful effects of drug use, emphasizing its detrimental impact on both individual health and societal well-being.
She appealed to the government, philanthropists, private individuals, and institutions to make substantial investments in preventive measures against drug abuse.
The commander expressed appreciation to the state government for its ongoing support and called for the provision of logistics vehicles to enhance the Command’s mobility across all 31 local government areas. She also acknowledged the collaboration and support of sister security agencies in the collective effort to achieve a drug-free society.
