Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central), has announced that the Senate will begin its public hearing on the review of the 1999 Constitution today in Lagos.
The public hearing originally scheduled for the North-West was postponed out of respect for the passing of prominent Kano industrialist and philanthropist, Alhaji Aminu Dantata, who died on Saturday.
In a statement released yesterday, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, who also chairs the South-West Zonal Constitution Review Committee, outlined the agenda for the two-day hearing.
He stressed that the forum offers Nigerians a crucial opportunity to share their perspectives on key issues influencing the country’s governance structure.
Bamidele explained that the exercise would provide a platform for dialogue on key national issues, including proposals for the creation of 18 additional local government areas, the establishment of state police, and broad reforms to the electoral system, among other matters.
As part of its efforts to promote inclusive participation, the Senate has also scheduled simultaneous public hearings in other geopolitical zones of the country, with the exception of the North-West region.
