A 100-level student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has reportedly lost her life after being unable to access life-saving medication for several days due to a dispute over hostel key rules.
According to eyewitness accounts, the student misplaced the key to her hostel room. Under the hostel’s existing policy, students who lose their keys are required to pay a fee before being issued a replacement or being granted access.
Despite explaining her urgent medical condition she was diabetic and dependent on insulin the student was allegedly denied a spare key and refused entry to her room for three consecutive days.
Tragically, she was unable to retrieve her insulin stored inside. Witnesses say her health deteriorated rapidly over the period, culminating in her death.
The incident has sparked outrage on campus and online, with many students condemning the rigid enforcement of hostel policies at the expense of human life.
Calls have intensified for the university administration and hostel management to urgently review their rules, especially for medical emergencies.
Friends and colleagues described her as a bright, promising young woman whose life was cut short by a preventable tragedy.
