Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has significantly increased the number of secondary school teachers in the state, nearly doubling the workforce from 13,730 in 2019 to 26,436 by mid-2025, according to the state’s Post Primary Schools’ Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM).
The development was disclosed by TESCOM Chairperson, Mrs. Olubukola Oladipo, during the Omituntun 2.0 Inter-Ministerial Briefing held at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan.
She revealed that 10,500 teaching and non-teaching staff were employed during Makinde’s second term alone.To further strengthen educational administration, four new Educational Zones have been established, bringing the total number to ten.
The zones now include Ibadan I–IV, Oyo, Ogbomoso, Kishi, Saki, Eruwa, and Iseyin.Oladipo also announced the creation of a Directorate of Pension and Post Services, dedicated to improving post-retirement welfare for TESCOM staff.
Between 2024 and early 2025, the commission reportedly recruited 7,500 teaching and 3,000 non-teaching staff to enhance student outcomes in both internal and external examinations.
She added that consistent promotion exercises were conducted from 2017 to 2024, ensuring career progression for eligible officers.
The commission also introduced several worker-friendly initiatives, including:
Continued payment of running grants to 695 public secondary schools Introduction of an electronic vehicle loan system to replace manual cheque disbursement Plans to train all 695 school principals in modern school leadership and management practices Oladipo emphasized that these reforms have not only created thousands of jobs for young people in the state but also significantly improved the overall education system and staff welfare.
