The Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) has approved a major reduction in electricity tariff for Band A customers served by MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited, the successor to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC).
Under the new directive, the Band A rate has been reduced from ₦209/kWh to ₦160/kWh, a move aimed at alleviating financial pressure on consumers while maintaining reliable service delivery.The announcement was made via Order No. EERC/2025/003, which outlines a new tariff structure tailored for the state’s recently established electricity market.
According to EERC Chairman, Chijioke Okonkwo, the reduced rate reflects a cost-reflective pricing model that factors in a federal subsidy of ₦67/kWh, bringing the average generation cost down to a more sustainable level. While the actual cost of electricity generation stands at ₦112/kWh, the government’s intervention allows consumers to benefit from lower prices.
“This tariff reduction is possible due to the subsidy cushion, and it ensures that Band A customers pay less without compromising service quality,” Okonkwo said.
Additional Measures for Service Accountability:
To guarantee that consumers get value for the revised tariff, the EERC has introduced strict compliance measures, requiring MainPower to:
Publish daily power supply data for each Band A feeder
Report service failures within 24 hours
Downgrade feeders that fail to meet the minimum service level for seven consecutive days
Okonkwo emphasized that this new pricing may not be sustainable if the federal government withdraws its subsidy, warning that tariffs could rise again in such a scenario.
Nevertheless, the Commission reaffirmed its commitment to reliable, affordable electricity access, noting that this tariff cut is a win for consumers and a step forward in developing Enugu’s subnational electricity market.
