
French media powerhouse Canal+ has acquired full ownership of MultiChoice Group, the parent company of DStv and GOtv, in a landmark $3 billion transaction.
The deal, approved by South Africa’s Competition Tribunal on July 23, 2025, comes with strict conditions aimed at protecting local content and preserving media sovereignty in the region.
As part of the agreement, Canal+ is required to:
Retain MultiChoice’s headquarters in South Africa
Support and invest in local content creators
With this acquisition, Canal+ now controls Africa’s largest pay-TV operator, serving over 14.5 million subscribers in 50 sub-Saharan African countries.
