A human rights organization, the International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (Intersociety), has called on Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, and the state’s Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, to urgently address rising tensions between Uli community in Anambra State and Egbuoma community in Imo State.
In a statement signed by the group’s Chairman, Comrade Emeka Umeagbalasi, Intersociety raised the alarm over reported invasions of Egbuoma, in Oguta Local Government Area of Imo, by vigilante operatives from Uli.
The group alleged that the vigilantes have engaged in repeated acts of abduction, with the most recent incident involving the kidnapping of one Kosarachi Ohajuba, who remains in captivity at a Uli vigilante facility.
According to Umeagbalasi, separate petitions dated July 25, 2025, were sent to CP Orutugu and Prince Ken Emeakayi, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, urging swift intervention to prevent a potential outbreak of violence between the two communities.
The group demanded the arrest and prosecution of members of the Uli Central Vigilante Group operating from Ndikeokwu village, accusing them of violent crimes and calling for the disbandment of the “killer-outfit.”
It also urged the immediate release of all detainees, including Ohajuba, who was allegedly abducted on June 20 and for whom a ransom of ₦2 million was reportedly demanded.
Intersociety warned that residents of Egbuoma are becoming increasingly frustrated and may soon retaliate, a move that could lead to casualties on both sides.
The group shared copies of acknowledgement receipts of their petitions and stressed that timely government action was necessary to defuse the brewing crisis.
Attempts by Gists9ja to reach Prince Emeakayi, who also heads the state’s vigilante operations, for a response were unsuccessful, as his phone was not reachable at the time of filing this report.
