Tinubu Deserves a Full Two Terms – Babangida Aliyu

Former Niger State Governor, Muazu Babangida Aliyu, has stated that if Nigerians could endure former President Muhammadu Buhari’s leadership for eight years, then President Bola Ahmed Tinubu deserves the opportunity to complete two terms in office.

Aliyu, who chairs the Board of Trustees of the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation, made this remark during an appearance on The Morning Show on Arise Television.

He stressed the importance of respecting the principle of power rotation between the North and South, warning that any attempt by northern politicians to vie for the presidency in 2027 could stir political unrest.

“I’ve heard some aspirants say they’ll only serve one term,” Aliyu said. “But if a northerner makes that claim, what issue does it solve for the North?”

Drawing a comparison, he added, “We managed to live through the challenges of Buhari’s eight-year rule. Let’s give this one (Tinubu) a chance as well. By 2031, we can revisit the arrangement.”

Aliyu acknowledged that while opposition parties like the African Democratic Congress (ADC) are gaining traction, they must present a credible alternative to Nigerians.

“My question remains: if you want to unseat the president, what better option are you offering?”

He also raised concerns about the rising wave of defections among political figures. “At the moment, it’s mostly governors and lawmakers switching parties. But by 2031, we could witness a sitting president defect. Wouldn’t that raise constitutional concerns?” he asked.
