The Executive Secretary of the Benue State Primary HealthCare Board (BSPHCB), Mrs. Grace Ashi Wende, has disclosed that 49 babies were safely delivered within a month at the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) clinic located at the International Market camp in Makurdi.
The camp, which shelters victims of the Yelwata attack, currently hosts 2,336 households and 5,294 individuals, including 2,536 children and 380 expectant mothers, according to figures provided by Wende during an Integrated Supportive Supervision (ISS) exercise.
She revealed that:
490 women received antenatal care (ANC) services in the past month.
27 women delivered at the clinic.
66 were referred to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH) for advanced care.
6 women with disabilities also accessed ANC services.
In total, 5,511 people received medical consultations between June 16 and July 14, 2025, including:
2,980 adults (339 male and 2,641 female)
496 adolescents aged 10–19 (192 male, 304 female)
2,030 children aged 0–9 years
Wende praised the collaborative efforts of the Benue State Ministry of Health (SMOH), UNICEF, other UN agencies, and Save the Children International, who supported infrastructure and health service delivery at the camp.
This includes a newly installed borehole and 3HP hybrid submersible pump, as well as WASH items to improve sanitation.
She also provided an update from BSUTH, noting that as of July 28, 2025, 44 IDP patients were admitted and none had been discharged.
Mrs. Wende commended the dedication of the multidisciplinary healthcare team and reaffirmed the commitment of the BSPHCB to meeting the urgent health needs of displaced persons in the state.
