Nigerian Anglicans Reject Election of Lesbian Archbishop of Wales, Cherry Vann

The Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, has formally rejected the election of Rt. Rev. Cherry Vann—an openly lesbian cleric—as the Archbishop of Wales, calling it a “serious departure from biblical teaching”.

In a statement issued by The Most Rev’d Henry Ndukuba, the Primate of the Church, the Nigerian branch said Vann’s elevation poses a threat to the unity of the global Anglican Communion, and that her lifestyle contradicts the sound doctrine of Christianity as referenced in 2 Timothy 4:3–4.

Ndukuba’s Key Remarks:

“The election of Bishop Vann is a clear revelation that many who claim to be members of the body of Christ can’t endure sound doctrine.”

He also accused Bishop Vann of contributing to the same-sex marriage crisis in the wider Anglican Church, reaffirming that:

“The Church of Nigeria will not recognize her election. We believe our Lord Jesus Christ will build His Church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”
