The Edo State Police Command has arrested a serving officer, Inspector ojo Oloruntobi ,alongside three civilians for alleged involvement in extortion, brutality, and robbery in Benin City.
Police spokesperson Moses Yamu, who confirmed the arrests in a statement on Sunday, identified the civilian suspects as Charles Onah, Joseph Ohis, and Enoma Agho.
According to Yamu, the suspects had been working in collusion with the police inspector to harass and extort residents. Their arrest followed a viral video in which a victim alleged he was abducted by policemen, intimidated, and dispossessed of his phone and valuables.
Acting on the complaint, Edo State Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika ordered an immediate investigation. On August 15 2025,operatives of the Ugbowo Surveillance Team intercepted the suspects with a silver Toyota Yaris and other incriminating items.
Condemning the act, CP Agbonika vowed that the culprits would face the full weight of the law, stressing the Command’s zero tolerance for corruption and misconduct within the Force.
“There will be no hiding place for rogue officers. Any policeman found guilty of extortion, brutality, or corruption will be dismissed, arrested, and prosecuted without delay,” Yamu quoted the Commissioner as saying.
The Command also urged the public especially the victim seen in the viral video to assist investigators with credible information to ensure justice is served. It further reassured residents of its commitment to protecting lives and property, restoring public trust, and upholding police integrity.
