The Ebonyi State Government has increased the minimum wage of civil servants from ₦70,000 to ₦90,000, with immediate implementation across all categories of workers.
The Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Ikeuwa Omebe, announced the decision on Thursday while briefing journalists on the outcome of the State Executive Council (EXCO) meeting.
According to Omebe, the wage increase is aimed at improving the welfare of workers and should not be seen as a political move.
“We want to state categorically that this is not a political statement as this government does not toy with workers’ welfare,” he said.
The commissioner noted that the present administration had already cleared outstanding pensions and gratuities owed state retirees from the creation of the state in 1996 to date. He further disclosed that a verification process for local government retirees is ongoing, after which payments will be made.
“If the government did not play politics with such huge financial obligations, it will not do so with an additional ₦20,000 to workers,” Omebe added.
He praised the governor for his leadership, describing him as a capacity builder committed to both human development and infrastructure. He also emphasized that the government was guided by the “People’s Charter of Needs” principle, which prioritizes governance based on the needs of the people.
On other EXCO resolutions, Omebe revealed that the council approved the enforcement of the eight-year tenure policy for directors and the retirement of those who have served for the stipulated period on the same cadre.
“The EXCO exhaustively deliberated on the issue and approved its implementation for the affected permanent secretaries and directors,” he stated.
