The uneasy relationship between Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) appears to have deepened, as the party is reportedly considering suspending him over alleged anti-party activities.
The rift stems from the PDP’s decision to retain Senator Sam Anyanwu as the party’s National Secretary, a move that sources say did not sit well with Governor Mbah. In protest, he reportedly shunned his appointment as Secretary of the National Convention Committee and has since avoided all National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings and other key party activities for several months.
Amid these tensions, Governor Mbah is said to be exploring the possibility of defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC), which has recently gained momentum in Enugu State. To pave the way for his entry, he is alleged to be working with a former APC state chairman who previously resigned from the party to create divisions within the state chapter and smoothen his transition.
However, political observers note that Mbah’s alleged plan may face significant hurdles, as he is reportedly not on good terms with key APC leaders in the state. This contrasts sharply with similar defections in states like Delta and Akwa Ibom, where former PDP governors collaborated with APC executives to secure seamless transitions.
Insiders also claim that all PDP insignia have been removed from the Enugu State Government House, a development seen as a symbolic step away from the party that brought him to power.
With the PDP hierarchy watching closely, sources say the party may soon wield the big stick by suspending Governor Mbah for what it considers open defiance and disloyalty.
