Fresh developments within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) indicate that some of its top leaders are actively pushing to persuade former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election on the party’s platform.
According to Gist9ja, a delegation of PDP leaders recently met with Jonathan to lobby him into rejoining the presidential race. However, the former president did not give them a firm commitment, explaining that he was still consulting and would communicate his decision later.
A party insider revealed, “Some PDP leaders met with Dr. Goodluck Jonathan to woo him ahead of the 2027 presidential election, but at the end of the day, he said he was still consulting and would get back to them.”
Meanwhile, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, a former presidential aspirant, has expressed opposition to the PDP’s move to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the South. He emphasized that the final authority on zoning rests with the party’s national convention rather than the National Executive Committee (NEC).
Olawepo-Hashim pointed out that in the past, decisions made by the NEC were overturned by delegates at the convention. He argued that the 2027 ticket should be decided at the convention scheduled to take place in Ibadan, Oyo State, on November 15 and 16.
This development highlights the internal maneuvering within the PDP as the party begins positioning itself for the 2027 general election, with Jonathan once again emerging as a potential contender.
