Reality TV star, Ijeoma Josephine Otabor, popularly known as Phyna, has announced the passing of her younger sister, Ruth Otabor, who tragically died weeks after being hit by a Dangote truck.
Phyna confirmed the news in a statement released through her Instagram page on Sunday, August 31, 2025. The family, represented by their solicitors, described Ruth’s death as a painful loss and pleaded with the public to respect their privacy during the mourning period.
The statement read:
“With a heavy heart, the family regrets to announce the passing on to glory of their daughter, sister, and mother, Ruth Otabor, on this 31st Day of August 2025 at about 06:30. The family is presently grieving and would appreciate being given a private moment to mourn the departed. Funeral arrangements will be communicated to the public in due course.”
Ruth, a graduate of Auchi Polytechnic, had earlier survived a devastating accident on August 13, 2025, near the school premises in Edo State. Reports revealed she was struck by a Dangote truck allegedly driven by an underage, unlicensed driver. The impact led to the amputation of her leg and left her in critical condition.
Following the accident, Phyna publicly demanded justice, accusing the Dangote Group of negligence. The company initially promised to cover Ruth’s medical bills, including plans to fly her abroad for advanced treatment. However, Phyna later claimed that the company reneged on its commitment, leaving the family to struggle with her sister’s care.
Ruth’s death has drawn widespread sympathy, with many fans and fellow celebrities sending condolences to Phyna and her family.
