A magistrate court in Asaba, Delta State, on Monday granted bail to self-acclaimed human rights activist Victor Ojei, popularly known as WongBox, following his arraignment by the Delta State Police Command.
Ojei was brought before the court on a three-count charge bordering on:
Threat to life
Assault occasioning harm
Threatening violence
The charges were filed under Sections 355, 86, and 249 of the Criminal Code.
The court imposed what was described as stringent bail conditions, which Ojei was able to meet before securing his release.
Following the ruling, several Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), led by activists Harrison Gwamnishu and Harrison Itulua, rallied around to ensure Ojei’s immediate release.
Confirming the arraignment, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, wrote on his Facebook page on Tuesday:
“Self-acclaimed activist Victor Ojei, popularly known as WongBox, was today arraigned and remanded in prison custody pending when his bail conditions are met. He was charged on three counts of threat to life, assault occasioning harm, and threatening violence contrary to Sections 355, 86, and 249 of the Criminal Code. Nobody is above the law.”
The case is expected to continue in court as Ojei faces trial on the allegations.
