Fabiyi Condemns Rivers State Political Crisis, Calls Local Government Elections ‘Completely Illegal’

Former Director of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Campaign, Oladimeji Fabiyi, has strongly criticised the recent political developments in Rivers State, describing them as unconstitutional and a major threat to Nigeria’s democracy.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television on Monday, Fabiyi reacted to the outcome of the just-concluded local government elections, stating that the entire process lacked legitimacy. He argued that both the appointment of a Sole Administrator and the conduct of the polls were “completely illegal.”

According to him, the political situation in Rivers State has been characterised by “scripts” designed to suit certain interests, rather than serving the people. He lamented that within the PDP, there now exist two categories of members — those who understand the principles of governance and democracy, and those who do not.

Fabiyi further warned that the ongoing crisis in the state is a dangerous signal for Nigeria’s democratic future.

“Democracy is under serious threat. Everything in Rivers State in the last six months has been illegal. From the appointment of the Sole Administrator to the elections, it is all illegitimate and full of illegality,” he stressed.

He also likened the unfolding situation to a cycle of lies, stating that attempts to cover one illegality with another will only deepen the political instability in the state.
