Morayo Afolabi-Brown Explains Why She Backed Tinubu in 2023: “It Was Deliberate”

Former Your View host and ex-Managing Director of TVC Entertainment, Morayo Afolabi-Brown, has opened up on why she openly supported President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 general elections.

Speaking on the With Chude podcast hosted by Chude Jideonwo, Afolabi-Brown said her decision was deliberate and deeply personal, citing her family’s long-standing relationship with Tinubu as an influence.

Family Ties with Tinubu

Recounting past experiences, she said:

“My father was president of the Nigerian Bar Association and a human rights activist. When he was very ill, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, who was governor at the time, stood by my mother. He helped with medical bills, and when things were really tough for the family, he was there for us. Later, when my brother returned home, Tinubu also supported him in politics. He was somebody that stood with us.”

However, she clarified that her career path was built on merit:

“It wasn’t through him I got my job at TVC. It had nothing to do with Asiwaju. I went there purely on merit.”

Why She Joined the Campaign

Afolabi-Brown revealed that she was formally invited to join the women’s arm of Tinubu’s 2023 campaign team and chose to accept because she genuinely supported him.

“I got a letter saying I had been selected to work with the campaign. I had two choices: say no or support him. I decided to support him openly. I worked closely with the media team, and I felt it was a good opportunity. It was really worth it.”

Addressing concerns that her involvement compromised her neutrality as a journalist, she argued:

“Well, the truth is perception is always reality. But I think TVC is probably one of the most objective stations. It’s hard to believe, but it’s the truth.”

Proud of Your View Legacy

Reflecting on her exit from Your View on August 29 after 12 years, she expressed pride in the talk show’s impact and longevity:

“We were 12 years in May. Honestly, I’m proud of where we are 12 years after. I’m proud of the work the entire team has put in to make it an awesome show. I also love that many more people have replicated the format, which is really great.”
