Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has called on the people of the South-East to take the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise seriously, stressing that the region is falling behind compared to other parts of Nigeria.
Speaking at an event in Imo State on Saturday, El-Rufai reminded citizens that democracy thrives on elections, noting that leaders are elected by the people, not appointed or selected. He emphasized that registering to vote is not just a political necessity but a civic duty every eligible Nigerian must embrace.
He particularly appealed to Igbo mothers, sisters, and daughters to encourage young people aged 16 and above, who will become eligible to vote at 18, to take part in the exercise.
According to El-Rufai, voter registration is crucial to ensuring that the South-East has a stronger voice in governance. He lamented that in the last two weeks, the region, including Imo State, recorded low registration figures.
The former governor maintained that active participation in the process would empower citizens to shape the future of their communities and the nation at large.
