Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has completed a season-long loan switch to Turkish side Trabzonspor, the club confirmed on Friday.
The 29-year-old Cameroonian, who joined United from Inter Milan in 2023 for an initial €51m, departs Old Trafford after a difficult spell characterised by inconsistency and high-profile errors.
Onana was signed to succeed long-serving goalkeeper David de Gea but struggled to settle in England. Despite playing a key role in United’s FA Cup triumph during his debut campaign, his performances were widely criticised—particularly in European competitions, where mistakes proved costly.
His second season started poorly, as a hamstring injury ruled him out of pre-season. He then committed an error in his first game back, contributing to United’s shock Carabao Cup exit to Grimsby Town. The late arrival of Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Antwerp for €21m pushed him further down the pecking order, clearing the way for his loan departure.
Confirming the deal, United stated: “André Onana has joined Trabzonspor on loan for the 2025/26 season, subject to international clearance and registration. We would like to wish André good luck.”
Onana’s Rise at Ajax
Before his struggles in England, Onana built a strong reputation at Ajax, where he played from 2015 to 2022. He won three Eredivisie titles, reached the 2017 Europa League final, and was instrumental in the club’s memorable run to the 2019 Champions League semi-final. His agility and distribution skills earned him global recognition, though his career was briefly interrupted by a nine-month doping ban in 2021, which he attributed to mistakenly taking his wife’s medication.
Success at Inter Milan
In 2022, Onana moved to Inter Milan and quickly became first-choice goalkeeper. He helped Inter win the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana, while starring in their run to the 2023 Champions League final, where they narrowly lost 1-0 to Manchester City. His impressive form in Italy secured him the move to Manchester United.
Fresh Start in Turkey
Now at Trabzonspor, Onana is expected to become the club’s first-choice goalkeeper as they compete both domestically and in Europe. For the Cameroonian, the move represents an opportunity to regain the consistency and confidence that once made him one of Europe’s most sought-after goalkeepers.
