United States President Donald Trump has announced that a suspect believed to be connected to the killing of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk is currently in custody.
Speaking on Friday during an interview with Fox News, Trump stressed that the information was still preliminary but confirmed that “this is the person we’re looking for.”
According to him, a minister who is also a member of law enforcement contacted the father of the suspect, which eventually led to the individual being handed over to authorities.
As of press time, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and other law enforcement agencies had not independently confirmed Trump’s statement.
Trump’s remarks came shortly after authorities released video and photographic evidence showing a person spotted on a rooftop near the scene of the shooting, appealing to the public for information.
Kirk, a close ally of Trump, was fatally shot on Wednesday while addressing an audience at Utah Valley University. Surveillance footage from the Orem, Utah, campus captured a figure running across the roof of a nearby building, then dropping to the ground before disappearing into a wooded area after crossing a busy street.
