The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has declared that the recent revelations by Sahel leaders, together with an earlier ruling by a Canadian court, have exposed the real financiers of terrorism in Nigeria. According to IPOB, the disclosures prove beyond doubt that key Nigerian politicians and political parties are deeply complicit in funding terror groups that have destabilized the country for over a decade.
The Mask Slips Off
For years, IPOB argued that those in power were behind Boko Haram, ISWAP, Al-Qaeda in the Maghreb, and similar groups. The latest revelations, IPOB says, have vindicated its position and revealed the extent of political involvement in violence that has claimed thousands of lives.
“These are the very people who fuel terrorism in Nigeria,” IPOB stated. “They masquerade as leaders while their actions plunge the nation into chaos. To hide their guilt, they hurriedly proscribed IPOB, creating a convenient scapegoat.”
Courts and Media as Tools of Propaganda
IPOB strongly criticized Nigeria’s judiciary and mainstream media, accusing them of collaborating with the political class to sustain a false narrative. The group pointed to the controversial 2017 proscription order, obtained ex parte, as evidence of judicial compromise.
“The judiciary should be the last hope of the common man, yet it has become a rubber stamp for political interests,” IPOB alleged. “Meanwhile, the media—bought over by crumbs—chants IPOB daily, refusing to confront the bigger truth that politicians are the real terror sponsors.”
The Case of Nnamdi Kanu
Central to IPOB’s anger is the prolonged detention of its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, despite several court rulings ordering his release. The group maintains that Kanu’s freedom is key to restoring peace in the Southeast, recalling his assurance that insecurity would end within 48 hours of his release.
“Instead of freeing him, they prefer to keep him in detention, because his release would expose the fraud behind Nigeria’s bloated security budgets and phantom contracts,” IPOB said.
Hypocrisy in Government’s Approach
The group condemned what it described as Nigeria’s “two-faced policy” on security. Terrorists responsible for mass killings in the North are often rewarded with stipends, reintegration programmes, and official pardons, yet Kanu—who has championed peaceful self-determination—is held in chains.
“This is hypocrisy at its worst. They shout ‘national security’ while they themselves bankroll insecurity,” IPOB declared.
The Real Enemy
For IPOB, the conclusion is clear: the real enemies of Nigeria are not IPOB or Mazi Nnamdi Kanu but the politicians in Abuja and state capitals who enrich themselves through conflict.
“The Sahel leaders’ revelations and the Canadian court ruling have torn the mask away. The truth is now clear: IPOB is not the problem. The true sponsors of terror sit in government houses and parliaments, feasting on blood and destruction,” the statement concluded.
