Press Statement by Comrade Emma Powerful, Spokesperson and Media/Publicity Secretary of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has condemned the ruling delivered by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, describing it as a “travesty of justice and a stain on Nigeria’s judiciary.”
In a strongly worded statement issued on Thursday, IPOB accused the court and the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) of orchestrating a judicial cover-up aimed at legitimizing the continued detention of its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
According to IPOB, Justice Omotosho’s decision to declare Kanu “fit to stand trial” was based on a falsified medical report allegedly procured by the AGF’s office, not by the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) as claimed in court.
“What happened today was not justice but a political performance disguised as law,” IPOB’s spokesperson, Comrade Emma Powerful, said. “Justice Omotosho relied on a forged medical report that never originated from the Nigerian Medical Association. This is one of the lowest points in Nigeria’s judicial history.”
“A Medical Report That Never Existed”
IPOB insisted that the NMA never conducted any medical assessment on Nnamdi Kanu since the court’s order of September 26, 2025. The group described the supposed report as “a political fabrication designed to deceive the court and the public.”
“There was no examination, no lab test, no blood or urine samples taken. The so-called report is nothing but a document written to please the government,” the statement read.
The pro-Biafra movement accused the AGF of overstepping his constitutional boundaries by intercepting and interpreting what should have been a confidential medical document between a patient and medical professionals.
“The AGF has no legal or ethical right to receive or interpret a medical report. By doing so, he breached medical confidentiality and committed an act of deceit against the court and the Nigerian people,” IPOB alleged.
“Court Misled, Justice Compromised”
According to the group, the NMA never formally presented any medical findings before the court on the scheduled date. Instead, the AGF allegedly presented a private document to Justice Omotosho, which was accepted as evidence without scrutiny.
“The judge relied on the AGF’s interpretation of a document that was neither verified nor discussed with Mazi Kanu. For the first time, our leader saw the so-called report inside the courtroom. That is not due process—it is judicial ambush,” IPOB stated.
The group argued that the ruling further exposed the erosion of judicial independence in Nigeria and the extent to which the executive now manipulates legal proceedings to achieve political objectives.
“Nigeria’s Judiciary Has Become a Tool of Oppression”
Describing the entire process as “state-sponsored injustice,” IPOB said the ruling confirmed that the judiciary has become an instrument of persecution against dissenting voices.
“Nigeria’s judiciary has lost its soul. The truth has become an inconvenience, and justice is now a matter of political loyalty. What we saw today was not law—it was fraud committed in broad daylight,” the group said.
IPOB also drew attention to the broader pattern of abuse in Kanu’s case, recalling how the federal government “illegally abducted” him from Kenya and has ignored multiple court rulings ordering his release.
IPOB’s Demands
The group listed three major actions it expects immediately from relevant authorities:
- Clarification from the NMA: IPOB called on the Nigerian Medical Association to publicly distance itself from the forged medical report allegedly used in court.
- Independent Examination: It urged the court to order an independent, internationally supervised medical evaluation to ascertain Kanu’s true health condition.
- International Intervention: IPOB appealed to the global community to take notice of what it described as “a deliberate collapse of justice in Nigeria” and to hold the Nigerian government accountable for the persecution of its leader.
“History Will Remember This Injustice”
Concluding the statement, IPOB declared that no amount of judicial manipulation would erase the truth or silence the demand for justice.
“What happened in court today will be remembered as another dark chapter in Nigeria’s legal history. When justice was buried, truth refused to die. Those who twist the law for political gain will one day stand before the court of conscience and history,” Comrade Emma Powerful said.
