The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has reacted to the recent statement issued by the Nigeria Police Force concerning the enforcement of a Federal High Court order that restricts protests in some parts of Abuja.
In a release signed by Comrade Emma Powerful, IPOB’s Spokesperson and Media/Publicity Secretary, the group acknowledged the press statement issued on October 18, 2025, by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, regarding Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/2202/2025: Federal Republic of Nigeria v. Omoyele Sowore & 4 Others.
According to the Police, the order bars protests within designated areas of the Federal Capital Territory — including Aso Rock Villa, the National Assembly Complex, and other sensitive zones — while affirming citizens’ constitutional rights to peaceful assembly.
IPOB Applauds the Police’s New Approach
IPOB commended the Nigeria Police Force for what it described as a “commendably professional and measured” communication, noting that it represents a welcome shift from the harsh and confrontational language that once characterized official responses to peaceful agitation.
“The tone of the Police statement reflects the maturity expected of a professional law enforcement body operating in a democracy,” IPOB said.
The organization, however, urged the Police to ensure that this professionalism is evident not only in words but also in practice. IPOB stressed that true integrity for the Police lies in impartial law enforcement and respect for human rights, regardless of political or regional differences.
Warning Against Infiltration of Protests
IPOB also expressed concern over reports that, in previous civic actions, certain elements within Nigeria’s security system had allegedly sponsored or planted provocateurs within peaceful protests to instigate violence and justify clampdowns.
The group called on the Police to be vigilant and resist such unethical conduct, emphasizing that such tactics undermine public trust and violate the rights of citizens.
“We urge the Nigeria Police Force to ensure that peaceful protesters are not infiltrated, provoked, or targeted. The use of state resources to sabotage lawful demonstrations would amount to a betrayal of the democratic principles the Police have pledged to uphold,” the statement read.
Clarifying IPOB’s Role in the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow Campaign
IPOB clarified that the ongoing #FreeNnamdiKanuNow campaign and its associated peaceful demonstrations are not organized by IPOB but by a coalition of human rights and pro-democracy activists, including Omoyele Sowore and his team, who have consistently affirmed their commitment to nonviolent advocacy.
“While IPOB is not the initiator of this campaign, we fully support its objectives because they align with our shared demand for justice, freedom, and accountability,” the statement continued.
Commitment to Peaceful Advocacy
Reaffirming its long-standing position on nonviolence, IPOB reiterated that the call for the release of its detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, transcends ethnic or political boundaries and represents a universal appeal for justice and respect for the rule of law.
The group directed its members to maintain peace, comply with court directives, and avoid confrontation during this period.
“We appeal to our members and supporters to remain calm and law-abiding. Our strength lies in discipline and truth, not in chaos,” IPOB emphasized.
Call for Police Protection and Judicial Accountability
IPOB further urged the Nigeria Police Force to prioritize the protection of peaceful demonstrators rather than treating them as adversaries. It noted that the eyes of both local and international observers are on Nigeria, and the conduct of its security agencies will determine the nation’s democratic credibility.
“The continued unlawful detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has already strained public confidence in the justice system. The time has come for Nigeria to show the world that it respects its own laws and the fundamental rights of its citizens,” the statement said.
