Parts of Igboland witnessed a partial shutdown on Monday as many residents voluntarily stayed indoors in solidarity with the continued detention of IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, a situation supporters describe as unjust and inhumane.
Citizens who spoke with journalists were unanimous in their stance, insisting that lasting normalcy can only return to the region when Kanu is unconditionally released. According to them, the ongoing sit-at-home observance reflects deep-seated frustration and a collective demand for justice.
Clarifying the group’s position, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) reiterated that it has officially ended the enforcement of Monday sit-at-home directives. This clarification followed a recent proclamation by its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, which expressly halted any compulsory shutdowns. As such, Monday’s low activity was described as a voluntary civic action, driven by personal conviction rather than coercion.
IPOB emphasized that Biafrans are free citizens with the right to decide how they express their grievances, stressing that no individual or group is being compelled to stay at home. The organization maintained that its democratic philosophy is anchored on allowing the people to make their own choices without intimidation.
The group expressed confidence that full economic and commercial activities would gradually resume across the region, noting that the absence of enforcement underscores a commitment to peaceful civil engagement. It also assured residents that no one would be harassed for choosing either to participate in or ignore the sit-at-home.
According to IPOB, the ongoing observance is a clear expression of free will, reflecting a broader demand for freedom and justice. As the group concluded, the decision ultimately lies with the people.
