Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, has strongly criticized the current state of governance in Nigeria, describing the country as a “crime scene” plagued by corruption and moral decay.
His remarks were made during a memorial event held in honour of the late elder statesman, Chief Edwin Clark, where he lamented the betrayal of the sacrifices made by Nigeria’s founding and past leaders.
In a passionate address, Obi paid tribute to former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, commending his patriotic service to Nigeria. However, he noted with regret that the country Gowon and others toiled for has descended into chaos and lawlessness.
“General Gowon, you gave everything for this country. Sadly, the nation you helped build has become a crime scene,” Obi remarked.
Rampant Corruption and Erosion of Democratic Values
Peter Obi did not mince words in condemning the widespread corruption and lack of accountability that have marred Nigeria’s governance, particularly under the current administration led by President Bola Tinubu.
“What we are witnessing today is blatant stealing stealing everywhere. It’s as though the sacrifices of our past leaders have been completely disregarded,” he said.
Obi also raised concerns about the erosion of democratic principles, citing recent electoral processes as evidence of Nigeria’s declining democratic integrity.
“We’re no longer operating as a democracy. We need to face the truth. Was the recent election in Edo State democratic? Everyone knows who the people actually voted for,” Obi added, calling into question the transparency and fairness of Nigeria’s electoral system.
Call for National Rebuilding
The former Anambra State governor urged Nigerians to face the reality of the country’s deteriorating state and begin the process of national rebuilding. He stressed that the ideals and dreams of Nigeria’s founding fathers are being shattered by systemic failure and bad governance.
“It’s time we start putting the pieces back together. The legacy left behind by our heroes is being destroyed. We must reclaim our country from those who have brought it to this state,” Obi emphasized.
The Need for Responsible Leadership
Peter Obi’s remarks reflect a growing frustration among many Nigerians who are disillusioned with the direction the country is heading. With widespread insecurity, economic hardship, and questionable electoral practices, calls for responsible and visionary leadership continue to gain momentum.
Obi concluded his speech with a call to action for all Nigerians, particularly the youth, to rise and demand accountability, transparency, and true democratic governance.
