People’s Gazette journalist Ahmed Oluwasanjo has come under fire after a series of resurfaced tweets from 2015 revealed his deeply tribal sentiments against Igbos living in Lagos State.
In two posts made on April 10 and 11, 2015, during the heated Lagos governorship elections between Akinwunmi Ambode of the APC and Jimi Agbaje of the PDP, Oluwasanjo explicitly derided Igbos and implied they did not deserve full representation in Lagos.
In one tweet dated April 10, 2015, Oluwasanjo wrote:
“let Agbaje b govr of Igbos becos that’s what he wants, Ambode will govn Igbos n other lagosians.”
The post suggests that Agbaje, the PDP candidate, was only fit to govern Igbos, while Ambode, the APC candidate, was portrayed as the rightful leader of “Lagosians,” implying that Igbos were outsiders.
In a follow-up tweet on April 11, 2015, Oluwasanjo continued his divisive rhetoric, saying:
“Congrats jimi govnr of Igbos. Big congrats A+ governor of lasgidi.”
Tagging APC stalwarts and influencers including @APCNigeria, @rossyabdul, @omojuwa, and @DeleMomodu, he dismissed Agbaje’s support among Igbos while praising Ambode as the true governor of Lagos (“Lasgidi”).
These comments have sparked outrage among social media users and civil society groups who accuse Oluwasanjo of hypocrisy, given his prominent role at People’s Gazette, a media organization that often projects itself as a defender of justice and equity.
“He has no moral authority to speak about equity or fairness if he could tweet such bigoted trash back in 2015,” one critic said on Twitter.
Neither Oluwasanjo nor People’s Gazette has issued a public statement addressing the controversy at the time of filing this report.
