The family of Mr. Ndubuisi Udutchay is mourning the devastating loss of their beloved son, brother, and uncle, who was gruesomely murdered by unknown gunmen in the early hours of July 3rd, 2025, in front of his residence in Independence Layout, Enugu.
Mr. Udutchay, 32, was shot at around 12:00 a.m. and was rushed to Enugu State University Teaching Hospital (ESUTH), Parklane. Despite arriving in critical condition, it took nearly 10 hours for surgery to be performed, as the hospital lacked adequate personnel and immediate resources. His family was forced to make frantic calls to external doctors and contacts to mobilize emergency medical support.
After the prolonged wait, Ndubuisi successfully underwent surgery and was moved to the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU). However, the ICU was grossly under-equipped, lacking essential life-saving devices, including a resuscitator. Despite surviving surgery, he tragically passed away shortly thereafter, due, in part, to the poor quality of critical care.
Ndubuisi Udutchay was the last of four children, a law graduate of the University of Nigeria, and Lawyer. He was a compassionate leader deeply involved in charitable and community efforts. He would have celebrated his 33rd birthday on October 14, 2025.
“This is not just our personal loss—it is a reflection of the deepening insecurity and critical gaps in our healthcare system,” friends of Ndubuisi said. “We firmly believe that with timely intervention and proper hospital infrastructure, Ndubuisi could have survived. His death must be a wake-up call for government and stakeholders in Nigeria’s security and health sectors.”
