Presidential aspirants under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition have agreed, in principle, to sign a unity pact pledging their support for whichever candidate emerges as the party’s flagbearer for the 2027 general elections.
As reported by LEADERSHIP Weekend, the move is aimed at fostering internal cohesion and unity within the party ahead of its forthcoming presidential primary. However, the aspirants are still expected to collectively define what would be considered a “transparent” and fair primary process before the agreement is formally signed.
Former Minister of Transportation and key figure within the ADC coalition, Rotimi Amaechi, confirmed the development in an exclusive interview with LEADERSHIP Weekend, indicating increasing coordination and unity among the party’s presidential hopefuls.
The party’s interim national chairman, Senator David Mark, had earlier assured that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) would remain completely neutral in the selection of its presidential candidate. Speaking on July 8, Mark emphasized that there would be no preferred aspirant and pledged to ensure a transparent and credible primary under his leadership.
His statement came amid growing speculation and internal competition within the coalition, as top political figures maneuver for the party’s presidential ticket.Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar recently signaled his intention to return to the presidential race in 2027. While hosting a delegation of Gombe stakeholders at his Abuja residence last Saturday, Atiku gave subtle hints of his readiness to contest. He later dismissed claims that he attended a meeting where he was urged to step aside for a southern candidate.
Likewise, former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, reaffirmed his 2027 ambition in a recent interview, making it clear that he is not considering a vice presidential slot and has not engaged in any such discussions.
With prominent figures such as Obi, Atiku, and Rotimi Amaechi now associated with the ADC coalition, the proposed unity pact is viewed as a strategic move to strengthen the opposition and consolidate efforts ahead of the 2027 presidential elections.
