Man Poses as Government Agent, Steals Phones from Women in Kano

The Kano State Police Command has arrested 27-year-old ex-convict, Mohammed Usman, for allegedly deceiving women across the state and stealing their mobile phones while posing as a government aid representative.

Usman was apprehended on July 14, 2025, after a woman from the Ahmadiyya Brigade Quarters reported that he had tricked her into handing over her phone under the guise of assisting her with a government intervention program.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, Usman had previously been convicted for a similar crime and had served a two-year prison term.

Further investigations linked Usman to at least 17 other women who shared similar experiences, confirming a pattern of fraud aimed at unsuspecting victims.In connection with the case, three suspected receivers of the stolen phones were also arrested, and eight mobile phones were recovered.

All the suspects are currently cooperating with the authorities.The Commissioner of Police in Kano, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, PhD, expressed appreciation to the public for their vigilance and support. He also warned residents to be cautious of unknown individuals claiming to offer government support.

The police urged anyone with relevant information or who may have fallen victim to such scams to come forward and report to the nearest station.
