Former Katsina federal lawmaker, Senator Abubakar Sadiq Yar’adua, has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), deepening the cracks within the ruling party ahead of the 2027 elections.
In a strongly worded resignation letter dated July 28, 2025, and addressed to his APC ward chairman in Katsina State, Yar’adua cited deep disappointment with the APC’s leadership, accusing the Tinubu-led administration of championing “destructive economic policies” and abandoning the common people it once pledged to serve.
“I cannot sit idly by and remain in a political party that has completely abandoned its foundational principles of being a servant of our teeming talakawa (masses),” he declared.
He described the APC government as:
Selfish and corrupt, prioritising elite interests,
Worse than the administration it replaced, despite campaigning as reformists,
Guilty of imposing policies that have undermined the welfare and dignity of Nigerians.
Yar’adua, a founding member of both the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) and the APC, expressed regret that the party had lost its moral compass. Referencing former Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s phrase, he accused current APC leaders of becoming “bandits in government.”
Shift to ADC
Calling the ADC a party that still believes in “serving the people and restoring Nigeria’s lost glory,” Yar’adua urged his supporters and political associates across Katsina and the nation to join him in the ADC.
This defection is significant for a number of reasons:
It comes just days after the Obidient Movement complained about exclusion from ADC decision-making, putting pressure on party leadership to manage competing interests.
It marks the first high-profile Northern politician in recent weeks to openly walk away from the APC over policy grievances, not just internal party squabbles.
The move also reinforces ADC’s ambitious coalition strategy as it continues to absorb disgruntled political heavyweights in its quest to mount a credible opposition to President Tinubu in 2027.
