Anfield will host an emotional tribute tonight as Liverpool remember the late forward Diogo Jota during their Premier League opener against Bournemouth. Jota’s wife, Rute Cardoso, their children, and other family members are expected to attend.
Jota, 28, died in a car crash in northern Spain in July 2025 alongside his younger brother, Andre Silva, 25. Liverpool manager Arne Slot wrote in his matchday programme notes:
“We know this will be a very emotional occasion, given it is the first league game since we lost Diogo and Andre. I believe Diogo’s wife, children, and family will be in attendance, and it is important we show that they will always have our love and support.”
Before kick-off, a minute’s silence will be held at Anfield and across all Premier League venues. Liverpool players will wear black armbands, while stadium screens will display images and messages for Jota and his brother. Fans in the Kop and Sir Kenny Dalglish Stand will unveil a special mosaic during the silence.
For the rest of the season, Liverpool will wear a “Forever 20” emblem to honour the shirt number Jota wore when the club won their 20th league title. The number 20 shirt has been retired following discussions with his family.
Former club Wolves will also pay tribute before their match against Manchester City on Saturday.
