The University of Jos (UNIJOS), Plateau State, is now evacuating its students from hostels, following a suspicious entry into a hostel and the deadly crises that have rocked the state since Sunday evening.
It was gathered on Thursday morning that the evacuation was heightened by a suspicious entry into the school’s hostel on Tuesday evening, which forced the management to order all the students to stay indoors.
Tychus, an undergraduate who spoke with FIJ on Thursday, said the school management consequently forced all the students to stay within the school premises.
He stated that this was at the peak of the escalating tensions in the state, which started on Sunday and has led to multiple deaths.
“So, on Tuesday evening, there was a suspicious entry into the university campus where all students at the hostels were asked to stay back inside and return to their hostels,” Tychus told FIJ.
“That’s when the panic started, and as of today, there was killing at the front of the school, and in some places in Jos today, it was a fight between Christians and Muslims.
“The situation is seen to be getting worse, and some states like Benue, Kogi, Lagos, and Abuja have sent buses to evacuate their students from the campus.”
The state government has ordered the immediate evacuation of all students from the university’s hostels. Those who reside in the city were to leave by 3 pm on Wednesday, while those who reside outside the city must leave on Thursday.
Recall that on Wednesday that violence erupted in front of the school’s permanent site and led to the death of one person.
The recent violence in Jos escalated on Palm Sunday, after unknown gunmen killed at least 40 residents in Angwa Rukuba in Jos North Local Government Area. The attack was said to be a reprisal for the killings of Fulani residents in the community.
