A member of the United States Congress, Riley M. Moore, has once again called on the administration of Donald Trump to take what he described as “forceful action” in response to the continued killings of Christians in parts of Nigeria.
The congressman made the remarks while reacting to recent violent attacks in Plateau State, particularly in communities within Nigeria’s Middle Belt region. According to Moore, Christians in the area are increasingly becoming targets of deadly assaults carried out by armed groups.
Speaking on the situation, Moore said the time had come for stronger international intervention to protect vulnerable communities.
“Now, I am asking the Trump Administration to take forceful action to defend our innocent brothers and sisters in Christ,” he stated.
Moore accused Nigerian authorities of failing to respond effectively despite alleged intelligence reports warning of impending attacks before the violence occurred.
“Enough is enough,” the lawmaker declared.
He further alleged that Christians who had gathered for a burial ceremony for victims of an earlier attack were themselves attacked and killed by what he described as “radical Islamic terrorists.”
According to him, “Christians who were gathered for a mass burial for those killed in a previous attack were viciously murdered by radical Islamic terrorists.”
The congressman also criticized the Nigerian government’s handling of insecurity, claiming authorities possess the capacity to curb terrorism but have failed to adequately protect citizens facing repeated violence.
“The Nigerian Government could root out the terrorism and stop the martyrdom of its own citizens. But, despite receiving early warnings of impending attacks, they are nowhere to be found as Christians are murdered for their faith, like lambs led to slaughter,” Moore said.
Describing the attacks as part of what he called an “ongoing Christian genocide,” the U.S. lawmaker urged Washington to play a more active role in addressing insecurity in Nigeria.
He added that he was pleased the Trump administration had specifically included the protection of Christians in Nigeria within its updated counterterrorism strategy.
“I am grateful the Trump Administration specifically identified protecting Christians in Nigeria in the administration’s new Counterterrorism Strategy,” he said.
Moore concluded by renewing his appeal for stronger U.S. involvement in protecting Christian communities in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, which he described as the epicentre of sustained violence and religious persecution.
