President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, his deputy Jibrin Barau, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele and Senate Chief Whip Mohammed Tahir Monguno are among prominent political figures expected to participate in today’s senatorial primaries of the All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The exercise is expected to witness intense political contests across several states as governors, former governors, serving lawmakers and other heavyweight politicians battle for tickets to the Senate.
Among serving governors seeking APC senatorial tickets are Hope Uzodimma, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, Dapo Abiodun, Abdullahi Sule, Mai Mala Buni, Ahmadu Fintiri and Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya.
Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello is also expected to join the race for the Kogi Central Senatorial District.
If successful in securing the APC ticket, Bello could face incumbent senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of the Peoples Democratic Party during the general election.
In Gombe State, former governor and serving senator Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo is expected to defend his seat against Governor Inuwa Yahaya.
Other former governors seeking Senate tickets include Jolly Nyame, Simon Lalong and Danjuma Goje.
Former Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege has also declared interest in the Delta Central Senatorial seat.
Some Aspirants Already Unopposed
Reports indicate that several top Senate leaders have already emerged unopposed in their respective districts, while some serving governors are believed to have secured consensus endorsements ahead of the primary elections.
The APC officially commenced its primary elections on Saturday with contests for House of Representatives tickets before moving to today’s senatorial primaries.
To address possible disputes arising from the process, the ruling party has constituted primary appeal committees across various states.
In a statement, APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka urged members of the appeal committees to discharge their duties fairly and impartially.
The party also directed officials deployed from Abuja to adopt indirect primaries in areas where stakeholders fail to reach consensus agreements.
